History
Tartu Academic Male Choir has been founded in 1912. It’s founder and first conductor was Juhan Simm, a composer, choir and orchestra conductor. In the first years of activity the choir consisted of the Estonian students of Tartu.
At present, students, lecturers and alumni of both higher schools of Tartu - University of Tartu and Estonian Agricultural University - are singing in the Choir. Singers from various student societies and corporations joined the first Estonian students choir.
In the first years of its activities the Choir mostly performed at Tartu and in the nearest vicinity of the town, often at public ceremonies and student festivals. At the initiative of its new conductor Leenart Neuman the first longer concert tour to Austria and Hungary took place in 1926. In 1933, Richard Ritsing became the conductor of the Choir and he remained in the office till 1974. In 1937, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Choir the longest concert tour so far was undertaken to 12 towns in seven European countries.
Although the activities of the Choir did not cease fully even during World War II we can speak of a new upsurge at the be- ginning of 1950’s. The Choir repeatedly performed in Moscow and Leningrad as well as in Kiev, Riga and Vilnius. In 1956, Tartu Academic Male Choir together with the Academic Female Choir of the University of Tartu, iniciated the students song festival “Gaudeamus” which is alternately held in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Alongside with national singing festivals they are very popular. The 1970’s were rich in concert tours for the Choir: Transcaucasia, Central Asia, Baltic republics, Poland and German DR.
In 1974, Alo Ritsing, Richard Ritsing’s son, continued his father’s work. During the last ten years the Choir has visited Bulgaria, Sweden, Netherlands, Germany and repeatedly our northern neighbour Finland. In the course of it’s long period of activity, Tartu Academic Male Choir has participated in many singing competitions. The period from 1982 has been especially successful when of nine competitions eight were won in a row, including inter- national choral festivals in Varna, Oldenzaal and Tallinn. The choir participated in the international week of choral music in Veszprem (Hungary) on July 19-26, 1992. It has been an initiator and active participant of several national and regional music festivals. Tartu Academic Male Choir has not specialized in one narrow genre. It’s repertoire includes folk songs, classical songs and those of various styles of contemporary composers.
